compassionless conserver...

"Mr. President, the tsunami death toll now exceeds 80,000!"
"Yea... but riddle me this... how many are Christians??? What... like five of them?"
"But Mr. President..."
"No butts private."
"But Mr. President... they could become Christians..."
"Hmm.... what would the most compassionate conserving president that has ever graced this oblongish office do? .... I've got it!!! EDIBLE BIBLES!!!!!!!"
"Eureka Mr. President! Read a page, eat a page!"
"And drop off a few cookies and cream bibles for me to inspect you hear? Glass of milk as well."

  • Altaf,

At times like these isn't it surprising that the rich muslim countries are not in the picture.

Undeniably the Islamic Relief agencies are doing a lot, but the silence of the "muslim" governments/monarchs is deafening. Why cant they spearhead efforts to provide aid? Where's Saudi Arabia and impotent OPEC?

I could be wrong here. But I have searched many news including Al Jazeera's website to find some info about aid from muslim countries, and with the exception of Malaysia(itself a victim but to lesser extent) I haven't found anything.

  • I was wrong. Saudi and Qatar did pledge $10M in aid.

  • Well Jafar, Bush hardly has a monopoly on being a compassionless conserver!

Really it is distressing - the amount of money that Pakistan's govt., for example, is going to spend on weapons - hundreds of millions, billion + of $$$. Much of this is by way of "aid" that are earmarked so that they have to be spent on made in usa weapons! This kind of "aid" functions as an indirect US subsidy to arms manufacturers.

But the richer countries - Saudi, and the OPEC group, yes, they should be spearheading such relief efforts. But they won't - is it any wonder they're not winning very many popularity contests? The even larger concern is what this is all leading to... what happens when there is this kind of a leadership vaccum... more later on that..
