Article on Keenan Malik

Below is a link to the website Black Information Link which is close to the 1990 Trust which is an anti-racist organisation in South London. This article was written in reaction to a divisive documentary by a guy called Keenan Malik which basically states that Islamophobia does not exist.

Despite the many political realities which Muslims face, it is disturbing to see that there are many in the liberal media which refuse to acknowledge that Islamophobia exists.

Keenan Malik’s recent Channel 4 documentary “Are Muslims Hated” shown on 8th January, was perhaps the most recent example.

The film professed the view that the existence of Islamophobia has been greatly exaggerated and is being used by Muslims to stifle free speech and prevent criticism of Islam.

Keenan Malik might be right that Islamophobia today cannot be compared to the homicidal racist violence of the 1970s. But that's about where the truth of his thesis ends.

However, I dislike the tactics of some Muslim groups in the UK over the Islamophobia issue: the IHRC's 'Islamophobia Awards' naming anti-religious journalist Polly Toynbee next to fascist leader Nick Griffen was daft, as was there comparing British Muslims today to Jews in 1930s Germany; and some of the venomous web assaults of the MPACUK are hardly likely to endear Muslims to the media or anyone for that matter.

Some Islamophobia is beyond the pale - indeed, I have had letters published in the press condemning Cummins, and like many, requested the Sunday Telegraph editor Dawson resign. But a section of the British Muslim community seem all too eager to take offence before wildly harranguing the offenders, but less adept at talking to their adversaries, as if people like Polly Toynbee are vacuous hatemongers.

I have had lengthy, and I feel productive email exchanges with several journalists, and found most prepared to listen. Thankfully, I'm not the only one.

If only Malik had pursued these issues, instead of his own silly agenda.
